Best Buddies Living: Thriving Independently, Living Inclusively

Best Buddies Living in State College, PA has been thriving for just over a year, offering individuals both with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities the opportunity to live independently in an inclusive community right in the heart of Happy Valley.
This vibrant living community empowers residents to build independence while receiving personalized support in essential life skills such as money management, healthy relationships, social skills, health and wellness, and more. Additionally, the program has weekly group dinners and social events together, allowing for a community that truly feels like family. Over the past few months, residents have enjoyed events such as game nights, mini golf, pottery painting, and a fan favorite—goat yoga!
When asked about her Best Buddies Living experience so far, resident Jordan Stephenson said, “Since moving in, I have learned a variety of independent living skills and my confidence has flourished. I currently take the bus to and from work each day, cook weekly meals, and maintain the cleanliness of my bedroom and the apartment unit as a whole. While the long-term goal is to live independently, living in a Best Buddies community has greatly improved my mental health and has provided support to help me thrive!”

Stories like Jordan’s are seen across the program as residents continue to grow and flourish in this inclusive and supportive environment.
Madison Smith, Best Buddies Living Residential Manager, reflected on her role with the program, saying, “It is such a privilege to serve as the residential manager at State College. Seeing how my residents thrive in this program and witnessing how seamlessly inclusive every resident is, truly couldn’t make me happier. I absolutely love my job, and I couldn’t be prouder of the work my residents put in every day. Best Buddies Living is a dynamic environment and the perfect program for anyone interested in living in a community of open-minded, inclusive, and caring individuals!”
