The Best Buddies International team recently returned from the Philippines, energized by a week filled with connection, collaboration, and community.
Representing the International Programs & Development team were Cary Ombres and Emma Zagar. Together with Michelle Aventajado, Executive Director of Best Buddies Philippines, the team spent time in both Cebu and Manila to celebrate the program’s impact and co-create a roadmap for future growth.
Empowering New Leaders in Cebu
The visit kicked off with the first-ever Best Buddies Ambassador Training in Cebu, hosted at a CPMS partner school. Ten students participated in this milestone session, gaining skills in public speaking and self-advocacy—and stepping into their roles as leaders for inclusion in their communities. Every Ambassador presented their speech to the group, closing the session with pride and purpose.
Walking for Inclusion
In Cebu and Manila, more than 1,500 participants gathered for simultaneous Friendship Walks, celebrating the power of inclusion and community.
In Cebu, the walk—organized in partnership with Children’s Paradise Montessori School (CPMS)—featured a moving speech by Mary Sue Cervantes Bathan, a 23-year-old with cerebral palsy, newly licensed professional teacher, and recent participant in the Ambassador Training. Mary Sue shared her personal journey with honesty and conviction, calling on the crowd to recognize and support the diverse abilities of every person.
Youth Leadership in Action
In Manila, the team had the opportunity to hear from student leaders representing four Best Buddies school chapters. Their presentations were both a look back and a look ahead—reflecting on how their chapters have evolved, adapted through the pandemic, and emerged stronger than ever.
Each presentation was a testament to the creativity and commitment of these young leaders.

Planning for Impact
Strategic planning sessions with the Best Buddies Philippines team focused on deepening chapter engagement, strengthening corporate partnerships, and expanding the program’s reach to 100 schools. Plans are already underway for a full calendar of inclusive events—from dance nights and talent shows to golf tournaments and volunteer activities—designed to bring even more people into the mission.
“This passion and commitment to expanding the Best Buddies mission was palpable,” said Emma, “The BBP team is in sync and ready to tackle anything that comes their way. Anyone who steps into their circle will want to stay.”
