Meet Maria!

For over a decade, Maria Rajakovich has been a shining example of leadership, friendship, and advocacy within the Best Buddies community in Pennsylvania. As a longtime participant and a state ambassador, Maria’s journey reflects the power of inclusion and opportunity for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).
Maria’s involvement began in 2013 during her first year at Duquesne University, where she joined the Best Buddies program through the St. Anthony Program. While she had friendships through her other activities, Best Buddies offered something different, true, lasting friendships and a platform to grow as a leader and advocate.
“Best Buddies opened so many doors for me,” Maria shared. “It gave me the confidence to grow in ways I never thought possible.”
Her dedication did not go unnoticed. In 2015, she was offered to join an Ambassador Training by the Pittsburgh leadership team. That moment marked a turning point for Maria, who embraced the opportunity to speak out, represent her peers, and advocate for the mission of Best Buddies. Through public speaking, self-advocacy, and continued leadership development, Maria has become a powerful voice for inclusion.
This year, Maria entered a new chapter by joining the Best Buddies Citizens program, where she was matched with her buddy Kristie. The Citizens program pairs adults with and without IDD in one-to-one friendships, and for Maria, Kristie has become not just a close friend, but also a trusted mentor and source of support.
Maria has also attended the Best Buddies International Leadership Conference three times, further honing her skills and expanding her ability to share the Best Buddies message with broader audiences. “Each program has shaped me into a stronger self-advocate,” Maria said. “But most importantly, it has brought me true and lasting friendships!”
Thank you, Maria! For being such an incredible part of the Best Buddies family!
