Best Buddies Friendship: Rory and Alicia

Inspired by her uncle, who has a disability, high school student Rory Fellows wanted to create more inclusive opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. “My uncle grew up in the 1960s and did not have access to the opportunities that exist today. He was isolated, not because of his abilities, but because of prejudice.” She decided to put this love into action by opening a Best Buddies school-based Friendship Chapter at her high school.
A few weeks later, at the first chapter event, Rory met Alicia. Rory wanted to get to know Alicia because of her personality. They were matched in a one-to-one friendship match shortly after the first event. Alicia shared that she enjoys spending time with Rory and is grateful for their friendship. “Being matched with Rory has given me the chance to get out of the house and grow as a more confident person.”
Best Buddies Senior Program Manager Shannon Wilson was instrumental in establishing the Best Buddies Chapter at Central Crossing High School.
“Watching a school go from not knowing about Best Buddies to creating over 20 one-to-one friendship matches and making inclusion a part of the whole school rather than one classroom has been one of the most rewarding experiences.”
Best Buddies in Ohio staff had the opportunity to sit down with Rory, Alicia, and their school advisor, Katie, to learn more about their friendship and what the program means to Central Crossing High School. Please enjoy this video highlighting such a special friendship.
