With her leadership and dedication, Boise State University Best Buddies was successfully re-opened in 2024. Since then, Shayna Speetjens has become a guiding force for Best Buddies International in Idaho, helping rebuild programming and expand opportunities for inclusion across the state.

One of her most impactful contributions has been helping launch Boise Citizens chapters, bringing the Best Buddies mission into adult communities across Idaho.

The Best Buddies Citizens program creates one-to-one friendships between adults with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), offering opportunities to build meaningful relationships, share everyday experiences, and support one another. Members also participate in inclusive group outings and have the opportunity to participate in an additional virtual event each month. These experiences are designed to foster connection and belonging in both social and community-based settings.

In its first year, Boise Citizens has already grown to more than 10 members and established two buddy matches! A strong start for a newly launched program in the region.

What truly sets Shayna apart is the way she brings these connections to life. She goes above and beyond for her members by planning creative, engaging events where everyone can participate and feel included. Her activities have included a Cookie Bake-Off, Trunk o’ Treat, a Movie Premiere night featuring Wonder, Buddy Walk, and Prom. Members are also looking forward to an upcoming visit with Belong Co. to enjoy drinks, spend time together, and connect at Quinn’s Pond.

Through each event, Shayna continues to build spaces where friendships can form naturally and inclusively. Her leadership has helped create not just programming, but a growing community rooted in joy, accessibility, and connection.
