It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of a profound loss within our Best Buddies in California family. Drew Petersen, affectionately known as “Woohoo Drew,” left an indelible mark on our organization and touched the lives of many. In October, Drew passed away, leaving behind a legacy of inspiration and joy that will forever be cherished.

Drew’s journey with Best Buddies was nothing short of remarkable. As a member of the Jobs program, he achieved his lifelong aspiration by securing a position at Pieology in 2019, a place that held a special spot in his heart as a pizza enthusiast. His positive spirit became a constant source of encouragement for both his coworkers and customers, and his passion for pizza even led to the creation of the “Drewza Pizza,” named in his honor during a local promotion last year.

Beyond his role in the Jobs program, Drew’s dedication to the Best Buddies mission propelled him to become an Ambassador. In this capacity, he not only embraced advocacy but excelled at it, becoming the top fundraiser at the 2023 Sacramento Friendship Walk. Drew’s commitment was truly exceptional; he drove three hours from Fresno to attend the walk, showcasing his unwavering support for the cause.

In July, Drew further demonstrated his commitment to personal and professional growth by attending the Best Buddies Leadership Conference. Here, he honed his advocacy and leadership skills, forming meaningful connections and friendships along the way. Going into the conference, he was named the statewide Ambassador of the Month, and he did an outstanding job living up to that title at each session and event.

Drew’s passing leaves a void within our Best Buddies in California family, but his spirit will forever shine brightly in our hearts. His memory will serve as a poignant reminder of the impact one individual can have on a community and how, through dedication and passion, we can make a lasting difference.

His mother, Kelly, shared,

“Drew told everyone about Best Buddies! He did this because Best Buddies helped him get his job at Pieology. He worked there for over 4 years. Drew wanted everyone to have the opportunity to get the job they wanted, and to have the support they need to do it.”

As we mourn the loss of a beloved member of our family, we also celebrate the incredible legacy that Drew Petersen leaves behind. May his story continue to inspire us all to embrace the Best Buddies mission with the same dedication that defined Drew’s journey. In honoring his memory, we recommit ourselves to creating a world of inclusion for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
