Since 1995, the Best Buddies Friendship Chapter at the University of Dayton (UD) has promoted inclusion on campus, and throughout the Dayton community. This year, Chapter President, Molly Morris wanted to take it to the next level. On Sunday, April 7, 2024, the Best Buddies Friendship Chapter at the University of Dayton hosted its own Satellite Friendship Walk!

Over 70 people turned up outside of UD’s Recreation Complex for a sunny day of inclusive fun. As they arrived, walkers picked up donut holes, generously donated by Bill’s Donuts Shop. Buddies signed a “Spread the Word: Inclusion” poster before gathering for opening remarks.

Friendship Walk Coordinator, Alissa Schiff and Morris thanked the community for raising nearly $3,000 for inclusion! These funds are sure to make a difference in the lives of people like Lizzie and Alan, and Michelle and Maddie. Both Buddy pairs have been matched in a 1-1 friendship for four years. A few tears were shed as the senior students reflected on their fond memories in Best Buddies.

The time came for the main event. Walkers set out for a stroll across campus, some determined to “win the race.” Families, friends, and dogs came together in a wonderful expression of togetherness and inclusion. Their 1-mile route returned at the Recreation Complex for refreshments, including Cousin Vinny’s Pizza.

The fun didn’t stop there. Raffle winners for the Up and Running fitness shoes and apparel raffle baskets were announced. Buddies listened to music, danced, took photos, and reminisced about all the fun they had together. Between the Game Night, Halloween Party, and Talent Show, there was a lot to smile about.

Best Buddies in Ohio is blown away by the University of Dayton Best Buddies Chapter and the Dayton community for their enthusiastic efforts to make Ohio a more inclusive place for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
