Meet Maggie Erickson: Advocate, Leader, and Friend

Since joining Best Buddies in Minnesota in 2018, Maggie Erickson has become a cornerstone of our community. Her journey began through a connection with her close friend and fellow Bethel University BUILD program graduate, Mikayla Holmgren. Over the last eight years, Maggie has poured her energy, passion, and vibrant spirit into every part of the organization, proving herself to be an extraordinary leader and a fierce advocate for disability inclusion.
Maggie’s involvement spans multiple program pillars, including the Citizens program and the Ambassador Academy. Through the Ambassador Academy, Maggie has honed invaluable skills for building meaningful friendships and public speaking. She uses her platform to spread the word about the importance of inclusion, effectively serving as a powerful voice and strong advocate for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Her dedication to the mission was on full display when she served as a Mission Partner in the 2023 Best Buddies in Minnesota Champion of the Year Gala. Alongside BBMN Advisory Board Chair Sara Messerli, Maggie helped raise an incredible $44,000 to support statewide programs, earning Sara the title of 2023 Grand Champion.

“Everything! But if I have to narrow it down, I love any opportunity to dance at an event and meeting new people.”
When asked what she loves most about Best Buddies, Maggie’s immediate answer is simple: “Everything!” But if she has to narrow it down, she loves any opportunity to dance at an event and meeting new people.
Beyond her advocacy and fundraising success, Maggie’s heart for genuine connection shines in her personal friendship through the Twin Cities Citizens program. In December 2023, she was matched with her buddy, Gabby. The pair hit it off immediately and love hanging out together. Just a few weeks ago, their friendship took center field—literally—when they attended a St. Paul Saints baseball game together, where Maggie had the honor of throwing out the first pitch.

Maggie’s growth as a leader is a continuous journey. In 2024, she attended the Best Buddies Leadership Conference (BBLC) for the very first time, an experience that fueled her drive to do even more. This July, she is eager to return to the conference for her second year, this time taking on the brand-new LIFE track to further develop her independent living and advocacy skills. Whether she is leading the charge on the dance floor, advocating for her peers, or throwing heat from a minor league pitcher’s mound, Maggie embodies the very best of Best Buddies.
We are so incredibly proud of her and so thankful for everything she has contributed to our community!
