Turning the Sibling Experience into Connection, Advocacy and Empowerment

Best Buddies International is excited to announce the official launch of the Best Buddies Siblings Program, a new initiative designed to support and connect siblings of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). The program gives young people ages 9–18 a community of their own where they can build friendships, share experiences, learn from one another and feel supported by peers who understand their unique sibling journey.

At the 2026 Best Buddies Leadership Conference this past July, Miss Teen Indiana 2026 Lily Bauer participated in the official launch of the Siblings Program. Lily, the older sister of Mary Elizabeth who has Down syndrome, has spoken about how her relationship with her sister has influenced her perspective and commitment to inclusion. She has since become one of the program’s first participants, taking part in its inaugural virtual event and was recently matched in a one-to-one sibling connection.

“I’ve always had a heart for individuals with different abilities but after becoming the big sister to Mary Elizabeth, that love just grew stronger and she helped shape me into the passionate advocate that I am today,” said Lily Bauer.

Through in-person and virtual activities, one-to-one sibling connections and opportunities for self-expression, the Best Buddies Siblings Program provides a space where participants can talk about their experiences, learn from one another and recognize the value of their own stories. Rather than defining young people solely by their role within their families, the program encourages them to embrace the perspectives and strengths they have developed and use them to pursue their own goals.

The new program is part of Best Buddies International’s broader commitment to family support and recognizes that inclusion has an impact that extends beyond an individual with IDD.
