Eleven New Leaders Graduate from Best Buddies Michigan Ambassador Academy

In May 2026, Best Buddies Michigan celebrated a major milestone with the organization’s first-ever Ambassador Academy Graduation Ceremony, recognizing 11 participants from across the state who officially became Best Buddies Ambassadors after completing a nine-month virtual leadership development program.
The newly launched Ambassador Academy was designed for individuals ages 14 and older, with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), to help participants grow as leaders, self-advocates, and public speakers. Through monthly virtual sessions, participants developed the skills needed to represent the Best Buddies mission at events, in the media, and throughout their communities.
Completion of the academy is required to become an official Best Buddies Ambassador, making this graduating class a historic first for the state of Michigan.
Throughout the program, participants explored a wide range of leadership and advocacy topics. Beginning in October, the academy introduced the foundations of leadership and advocacy, helping participants identify their own strengths and leadership styles. In later months, they learned about the history and mission of Best Buddies, strategies for promoting inclusion, and ways to navigate both social and professional environments with confidence.

Additional sessions focused on conflict resolution, teamwork, and media advocacy, teaching participants how to effectively communicate their stories both in person and online. One of the program’s most impactful sessions, “Lead Like YOU,” encouraged participants to embrace their unique strengths and develop authentic personal brands rooted in their values and passions.
The academy concluded in May with participants creating plans to continue implementing their leadership skills beyond the program.
Organizers say the impact of the graduates will extend far beyond the ceremony itself. Whether advocating for themselves at work or school, speaking publicly about inclusion, or leading by example in their communities, these new ambassadors are helping create a more welcoming and inclusive Michigan.
With the success of its inaugural class, the future of the Ambassador Academy — and the leaders it will continue to develop — looks incredibly bright.
