Where Everyone Belongs: Ella and Lucy’s Journey in Best Buddies

Ella Tousey (left of picture) and Lucy Diers (right of picture) have been a part of Pella High School’s Best Buddies for one year. Their motivation to join Best Buddies was to create as many great friendships as possible in a welcoming space where everyone joins without judgment. They both shared that Best Buddies brings together so many kind and caring people, and even if you do not have an intellectual or developmental disability, you can still learn so much from the people and the program.
Despite only being in the Best Buddies program for a year, both Ella and Lucy have embraced leadership roles at Pella High School Best Buddies. Ella currently serves as the Chapter Vice President, a role in which she steps in for the Chapter President when needed and helps plan and execute meetings and events to ensure quality friendships are being made. Lucy is the chapter’s Buddy Director, responsible for communicating with chapter members, sharing program goals and ideas, and helping to manage overall chapter success.

“Some small accomplishments we have had so far are having over 5 buddy pairs, having our first meetings and getting donations,” the pair shared.
Ella and Lucy have created many fond memories during their time in Best Buddies. They love going shopping together, with Target and Hobby Lobby being their favorite spots, especially for getting crafting materials, which they both enjoy.
“My favorite memory specifically from Best Buddies is the match party. Although Lucy and I knew we were partners, it was super cool seeing the plans turn out for our first meeting and seeing everybody excited for their buddy pairs!” Ella shared.

Ella’s message to others in the community about the importance of inclusion and friendships is that no one is defined by a disability.
“We are defined by the one who created us, God. God made every one of us perfectly, it is important that we treat each other that way.” Ella said.
Lucy’s message to others about inclusion is that no one should be left out, and she works very hard to be inclusive.
“Best Buddies is very good at including all the people with disabilities in my classroom, so we can all make friends. It is good for everybody to have friends because when I am with my friends I have so much fun!” Lucy said.
