Meet Heather Mirto

We love celebrating the incredible schools that go above and beyond to support the Best Buddies mission, and today we’re proud to spotlight Appo High School and their outstanding advisor, Heather Mirto.
Appo High School has consistently demonstrated what it means to lead with inclusion, and last year’s Friendship Walk was no exception. The Appo team was the top fundraising school, raising an impressive \$3,256 to support friendship and inclusion for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Their energy, enthusiasm, and dedication truly set them apart.
At the heart of this success is Heather Mirto, who has served as the chapter advisor since 2023. From the very beginning, Heather has been a passionate advocate for inclusion, bringing commitment, creativity, and leadership to her role. She not only shows up for her students but inspires the entire Appo community to show up as well.

Heather’s dedication extends beyond the school year. She has attended the Best Buddies Leadership Conference (BBLC) twice, bringing back valuable insights and ideas to strengthen her chapter. She has also encouraged her students to participate in the Best Buddies International Cultural Exchange Program, helping them broaden their perspectives and expand their impact.
Today, the Appo chapter continues to thrive with over 50 members and 8 buddy pairs, creating meaningful one-to-one friendships. Their leadership team includes more than 10 student leaders, including her amazing Chapter President, Kara, and Buddy Director, Samantha. The Buddy Director is a leadership role reserved for a student with IDD, ensuring that every voice is represented and that the chapter truly lives out the mission of inclusion.
Heather Mirto’s leadership is inspiring, and her impact is felt throughout the entire Appo community. Way to go, Mrs. Mirto and Appo High School!
