University of North Carolina Honored at 2018 Leadership Conference!
The Best Buddies college chapter at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Chapel Hill, North Carolina was presented with the 2017-2018 Overall Most Outstanding College Chapter Award at Best Buddies International’s 29th Annual Best Buddies Leadership Conference: This Is Me. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was selected from several Best Buddies college programs throughout the world.
The college program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which has 300 participants, was started in 1989. Best Buddies North Carolina operates 26 chapters in middle schools, high schools, and colleges.
Best Buddies at UNC Chapel Hill is an awesome example of how friendship can change the way a community views our friends with IDD! The Joy Prom and other such events allow the students to engage their Buddies in amazing social interaction. Everyone is valued and included! BBNC is so proud of the fine work being done in Chapel Hill to promote friendship and inclusion.
Over 2,300 students, leaders, volunteers and staff members, representing Canada, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Germany, Haiti, Hong Kong, China, Macau, China, Lebanon, South Korea, Thailand, and the United States traveled to Indiana University in Bloomington to participate in the conference, on July 20-22. Working under the theme “This Is Me,” these students, selected for their active leadership roles within Best Buddies, attended a series of interactive workshops focusing on leadership development, community service, civic responsibility, IDD, and volunteerism. The leadership conference was live streamed, showcasing the amazing performances, speakers, and education sessions that took place this year.
