Leaders, Friends, and Teammates: How Kaleb Kennis and Jacob Sims Shine in North High’s Best Buddies Program

Kaleb Kennis, junior (left of picture) and Jacob Sims, sophomore (right of picture) are both members at North High School Best Buddies. This year is their first year apart of the Best Buddies program. Kaleb joined Best Buddies to become a better friend, have fun and meet new people. Jacob’s motivation to join Best Buddies was that he wanted to become better at bowling and also meet new people.
Some achievements and milestones the duo have completed while being a part of Best Buddies is that Kaleb has become the varsity quarterback for North High School and is going to state for Unified Sports in Bowling. Kaleb also attended the Best Buddies Central Iowa Local Leadership training day along with Chapter President Mily Armenteros. Kaleb has quicky become a leader within the North High School chapter and is always willing to help whenever it is needed. Jacob shared that an achievement he has made since joining is creating a YouTube channel for Roblox and hitting over 100 followers. The pair made a deal that once Jacob reaches his next goal, Jacob will give Kaleb a haircut of his choice.
“I’m both excited and a little nervous about that.” Kaleb shared.
One of the most memorable stories that Kaleb has while being a part of Best Buddies was during Special Olympics unified bowling, where he and his partner made it to state. Kaleb shared that it was such a fun and unforgettable experience. Another great experience he has with Jacob specifically is when they went out to lunch with each other and Jacob called him for his birthday.

Kaleb’s message that he would like to share with others in the community about the importance of inclusion and friendship is that is called Best Buddies for a reason — “We’re all just friends, and everyone deserves to be treated with love, kindness, and compassion.” Kaleb said.
