Meet John Hammond
“Before becoming involved with Best Buddies, I spent most of my free time at the University of San Francisco going to sporting events. I didn’t have many friends, but I was always looking for ways to meet new people. Since joining Best Buddies, my life has changed for the better. Having a one-to-one friendship has helped me meet more friends and I’ve become a leader. My buddy’s name is Walt. I met Walt through volunteering on former California State Senator Leland Yee’s campaign about three years ago. I told Walt about Best Buddies events and he told me about the various political events in San Francisco. We started working together on both Best Buddies events and political campaigns in the city. We also worked together on the Friendship Walk committee and continue to talk on Facebook at least once a week. Walt has also helped me improve my leadership skills by helping me with my speeches and public speaking skills.
“I am honored to say that I am an advocate for people within the intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) community. I have helped with the disability rights movement on many political levels and thanks to Best Buddies, I have accomplished many great things since becoming an Ambassador. One of my proudest moments was when I gave a speech at the state capitol in support of the State Health Assembly Bill that replaced the words “Mentally Retarded” with “Intellectual Disabilities” within state legislature. It was an amazing day.”
