Jobs Educational Track

Best Buddies Jobs provides person-centered supported employment services to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The program focuses on developing competitive, integrated jobs that allow participants to earn an income, pay taxes, and work in an environment alongside others in the community.

Join us for the 29th Annual Best Buddies Leadership Conference to learn more about the Jobs program and receive hands-on training to support your involvement. The weekend-long training will focus on reasons to work, determining goals, how to secure a job, and will offer various tools for success in the workplace. Trainings will be comprised of large group sessions, track-specific workshops, and roundtable discussions.

Conference Training Opportunities

There will be two separate tracks offered in the Jobs training sessions at the Best Buddies Leadership Conference in 2018.

Employed Individuals: This track is designed for individuals who are already employed, and are not currently seeking a new position. Areas of focus will include:

  • Introduction to employment: expectations, rights, and why people work
  • Your ultimate goals and how they are connected to your job
  • Setting-based behavior
  • Dress for success
  • Self-advocacy at work
  • Career growth and development
  • Ticket to Work: transitioning off of cash benefits
  • Strengthening your professional network
  • Facing your current goals and challenges
  • Networking event with Best Buddies board members and advisors

Individuals Seeking Employment: This track is designed for individuals who are interested in seeking employment. Areas of focus will include:

  • Introduction to employment: expectations, rights, and why people work
  • Your ultimate goals and how they are connected to your job
  • Resumes and references
  • Dress for success
  • Identifying what job you want to pursue
  • Seeking support via Vocational Rehabilitation and Departments of Developmental Services
  • Self-advocacy orientation
  • Basic networking and beyond
  • Speaking with employers: inquiries and interviews
  • Investigating what happens after you get a job
  • Networking event with Best Buddies board members and advisors

Application Process

In order to be considered to attend conference, all interested participants must complete an application and submit it to Best Buddies staff no later than May 1. All participants should discuss which track best suits their needs and experience with their local Best Buddies staff member prior to completing their application.

Once an application has been approved, a staff member will send instructions for registering for the conference. Please note that completing the application does not mean you are registered for conference. If you have any questions about the application process or the trainings being offered, please speak to a Best Buddies staff member.
