Meet Jon and Miles
“Before Best Buddies, I was going to work, working out, and then hanging out with friends. It didn’t seem like I was doing much for others,” says Jon. “I’d go to church and volunteer when people needed something, but I didn’t feel like I was making a real impact in life. Why not connect and help make someone else’s life better? I first got introduced to Best Buddies through one of my good friends and college roommate, Brett. He introduced me to his buddy, Miles, and brought him into our group of friends. Miles became one of the guys quickly because of his fun personality and ability to make everyone laugh. About a year ago, Brett moved to Tennessee for his job and had to leave the Indianapolis Citizens group. I talked to Brett about possibly taking over for him as Miles’ buddy. The next week I contacted Best Buddies and told them I wanted to take over for Brett. It’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. My life has changed in a few ways: I’ve learned to be more patient and comfortable not being the loudest in the room. I’ve learned that people with disabilities often perceive and feel things at a deeper level than what we even realize. I know Miles cares about every single person he comes in contact with anBurnsd would try to help or welcome them with anything that he could. People like that are hard to find. We do tons of things together. We actually have a 2017 activities list we’re working through. So far, we have gone bowling, rock climbing, Miles tried sushi for the first time, and I had Popeye’s for the first time. We’ve also attended an Indianapolis Indians’ baseball game, an Indianapolis Pacer’s game, tried Vietnamese food, shopped for Mother’s Day cards, and went clothes shopping for Party with a Purpose, just to name a few.”
“My life before Best Buddies was about searching for answers on what the future held for me. I have been through lots of obstacles such as losing my father, cousins, uncles and other things,” says Miles. I wanted to see what Best Buddies had to offer, so I joined the program at 34 years old and this has been one of the greatest things that I have done in a long time. My buddy Jon and I enjoy going to restaurants and sporting events together, and we’ve attended the Best Buddies Leadership Conference together as well. I couldn’t have asked for a better buddy that I can trust and make great memories with. I wish to continue being with Best Buddies because they are family to me.”
