Best Buddies Jobs: Participant Taurean Ross Tells his Story
On November 3rd Best Buddies hosted a reception to honor long-time supporters, Jay and Colleen Doherty. The evening of celebration and increased awareness for the Best Buddies mission was fueled by a powerful speech given by Jobs Program participant, Taurean Ross. Taurean has been involved in the Jobs program for over two years now and is currently working as an Office Assistant at Milhouse Engineering & Construction.
Before finding Best Buddies, Taurean stated in his speech, “… I didn’t have any support and was really struggling to find work”. When welcomed into the Jobs program in 2015, Taurean began one-on-one work with an Employment Consultant to identify clear goals and create a plan to reach competitive and integrated employment. Taurean spoke to this initial support from the program, “From working on my resume to practicing interviews and coaching me, Best Buddies advocated for me like no one had before.”
Best Buddies saw the potential that Taurean had and knew that, provided the opportunity, he would excel in the workforce. With Milhouse for almost a year now, Taurean reflects on the progress he has made, “I have noticed a shift in myself…that I owe to my co-workers- I have become more focused, found greater purpose and feel more empowered to advocate for what I need”.
Since starting a partnership with Best Buddies earlier this year, Milhouse has shown their clear understanding of the power of diversity and a strong commitment to inclusion. Kyle Baily, Taurean’s co-worker, and Buddy through the Citizens program introduced Taurean at the reception stating, “It’s good to be with an employer that is all-inclusive and open to providing opportunities for everybody, as well as allowing them to flourish.”
Building sustainable, mutually beneficial partnerships to ensure increased opportunities for people with disabilities would not be possible without companies like Milhouse who truly understand the power of inclusion in the workplace.
