Best Buddies Indiana Goes To Washington, D.C.!
With funding and support from the Indiana Governors Council for People with Disabilities, Best Buddies Indiana was able to partner with the Close Up Foundation to send six Buddy pairs to Washington D.C. for five night full-immersion experience into American history and politics. Best Buddies pairs worked together to support each other throughout the experience and put Best Buddies mission of social inclusion into action in our nations capital. While in DC students toured all the major memorials, went to see the Washington Nationals play live, and participated in discussion about relevant social and political issues. One of the Best Buddies participants had this to say about their experience:
“My favorite part of the trip was watching the other participants in the Close Up program get to know our buddies. In the beginning of the week, everyone seemed hesitant to interact with our group. Nobody knew how to interact with our buddies or what to even say with them. As the week progressed, everyone was able to learn and open up to us. By the last night, our buddies were fully integrated into our groups. People would come up and talk to them and put an effort into getting to know them. I think it was a lot of the participants first time really being around individuals with disabilities so it was really cool to help them learn and open up.”
Best Buddies Indiana is incredibly grateful to the Indiana Governors Council for People with Disabilities for making this trip possible, and to Close Up for inviting us and welcoming us to your city! BBIN is excited to continue this program in 2017. If you are interested in participating in BBIN’s 2017 Close Up experience please contact Eva Riddick, email@example.com.
