Bridging the Gap: Lafayette Area Buddies Transition from High School to College Chapter
The Best Buddies Mission is alive and well in Lafayette, IN with well over 250 active program participants spanning across two high schools and one university. There are currently three school friendship programs, Lafayette Jefferson High School, West Lafayette High School and Purdue University, which provide buddies and their peers with the opportunity to continue their journey of inclusion and friendship.
On Tuesday September 13th, Overall Outstanding Chapter of the Year (2016), Purdue University kicked-off chapter festivities with their annual “Match Party,” and there were a few familiar faces at the event. Former West Lafayette Best Buddies Vice President and alum, Bracee Dudley was ecstatic to finally meet her new buddy, Tasha Basham. The duo spent the evening sharing stories, common interests and more. When asked about her transition from the high school to college program, Bracee had this to say,
The transition from West Lafayette Best Buddies (WLBB) to Purdue University Best Buddies (PUBB) honestly wasn’t a hard transition at all. One of the caregivers for a WLBB buddy was actually a part of the PUBB chapter & was the first direct link that I had between the two. Eventually, at the Leadership Conference 2016, I met through him a handful of other people in the PUBB chapter such as the President, a couple advisors, and other officers and a couple buddies. They had even told me, after the matching party, that it was very easy for them to pair me with my buddy because they already knew me and what I was like. It’s been a very smooth and enjoyable transition, and I look forward to an amazing year with Purdue Best Buddies.
Michael Eyman (Buddy, WLHS 16’) and Scotlyn Sunkel (Chapter President, LJHS 16’) were also in attendance at Tuesday’s event.
The transition from high school to college is an exciting and pivotal time for young adults. As with any major life change, having a buddy to depend on and confide in makes the journey worthwhile.
