Albany & Long Island Host Their 2016 Local Leadership Training Days
Local Leadership Training Day: Albany
On Tuesday, August 30, 50 high school student leaders from around the Capital Region attended Local Leadership Training Day at Guilderland High School to engage in group discussions, share ideas and receive extensive training on how to successfully run a Best Buddies chapter in their school communities.
The day was kicked off by a reflection of the Best Buddies mission, with the students sharing personal stories about why they have dedicated themselves to the organization. After a discussion of various ways to spread the mission in their communities, there was an emphasis on how to keep participants engaged in the mission all year long and how to plan creative, inclusive group activities. There was open discussion for ideas about effective communication within their chapter leadership and students shared advice and best practices. The students left with fresh ideas for recruitment and fundraising.
The officers walked away energized and prepared for the 2016-2017 school year, with a focus on building lifelong friendships and spreading the mission of Best Buddies.
Local Leadership Training Day: Long Island
Nearly 50 student leaders volunteered their time on a Saturday afternoon to come learn how to effectively manage their chapters for the 2016-2017 school year. The YMCA Boulton Center of the Performing Arts generously offered their space for our officers to utilize.
Our students also enjoyed a special performance from an incredible pianist, Brittany Maier, a young woman with disabilities. As a result of LLTD, we believe our officers feel confident in their roles and their ability to spread the mission of inclusion in their schools. “I always leave every event we have feeling so motivated and inspired to do the most I can for my chapter,” Sara Murphy, Oceanside High School.
