One-to-One Friendship: Chelsea and Taylor
by Taylor Lodewegen
The first time that Chelsea and I hung out I was so nervous! What if she didn’t like hanging out with me? What if we didn’t have anything in common? When I first moved to Illinois I remember having these same exact thoughts when I began meeting new people.
One thing that makes Chelsea unique is that she does not communicate verbally. For us, this does not take away from the friendship we are building! Chelsea has a very noticeable emotion; she is ALWAYS happy. I have never seen Chelsea without a smile on her face. She is so appreciative of wherever I take her, whatever the weather might be, and even the type of music I play (even though I think she’s just being nice when she smiles as I belt out all my favorite country tunes in my horrible singing voice).
This past month, I was able to go with Chelsea to her parent’s house for her brother Gage’s graduation party. When I thought Chelsea’s smile couldn’t get any bigger, she proved me wrong! The moment she saw her younger brothers, her parents, and her puppies she was beyond happy. Chelsea couldn’t wait to show me her house, family, and friends. I truly felt like we had reached a new point in our friendship where we were genuinely sharing things that we love with each other.
As we continue to hang out and learn new things about each other there is one thing that I know that will keep our friendship strong – we both know the value our friendship brings to our lives. Thank you, Best Buddies for making our friendship possible and for allowing so many others, like Chelsea and I, the chance to develop true, meaningful friendships!
