Best Buddies Jobs: Blazing a Trail for Employees with IDD
The Jobs staff from Best Buddies Illinois recently attended the Association of People Supporting EmploymentFirst (APSE) conference in Cincinnati, Ohio along with other Jobs staff from across the county. APSE aims to provide a space for like-minded people and organizations with similar values to discuss successes and challenges that are still very relevant in the community.
Participants in the conference were given the opportunity to collaborate with other supported employment specialists in order to continue improving services and service delivery to our participants. The APSE conference brought together talented professionals to discuss and come up with solutions for some of the most critical issues that are facing employment opportunities for people with disabilities, like equal pay and diverse employment opportunities.
Best Buddies stood out amongst other employment agencies around the country because of our commitment to finding fair-wage paying jobs in integrated settings and the vast array of jobs that become available to our participants through the program.
Unfortunately, many organizations and states lean towards more traditional sheltered employment placements (environments where only individuals with disabilities work and get paid below minimum wage), but Best Buddies and our partners are working hard to change this model. At the conference, it was clear that this is truly a growing movement that Best Buddies has a major role in leading and we couldn’t be more proud!
