More Delawareans Will Have Access To Best Buddies Friendship Programs
The Best Buddies Delaware (BBDE) staff is pleased to offer its signature friendship model to many more people in the coming months through the expansion of our friendship programs for both students and adults.
The BBDE staff has been actively been working to bring its programs to all in Delaware, and there’s a new and focused push to bring the Citizen Program (for adults) specifically to people with IDD in Southern Delaware, and to Greater Wilmington area schools.
“The need is great everywhere in Delaware for our program, but due to the more rural geography and limited social activities available to people with IDD in southern Delaware, the need is more urgent,” said Tom Waite, Area Director for Best Buddies Delaware.
In effort to make programs more accessible, Best Buddies Delaware has established a Satellite office 550 South DuPont Boulevard in Milford, and hired a new Program Manager, Deanna Blizzard, to support our growth.
“We’ve been actively working to involve people in Kent and Sussex Counties for some time, but having a local person who can network and engage the community is an important asset. We look forward to having staff who can inform and inspire other local residents and draw them into our program and Deanna will do a great job of engaging the local community with our mission,” added Tom Waite.
BBDE will build on its existing 17 active school chapters and expand into two new middle schools and six new high schools during the 2016-17 academic year. The expansion is made possible through funding by the Longwood Foundation and will be led by Lead School Program Manager, Shannon Kowal and Area Director Tom Waite. “I’m excited to bring our programs to schools that we believe will benefit from our friendship model. A lot of focus and effort will be spent on building strong and sustainable chapters,” said Area Director Tom Waite.
