Inclusion Hits the Dance Floor at Best Buddies Friendship Ball
On Friday, February 5th, more than 400 Best Buddies participants from middle schools, high schools and colleges in Upstate New York attended the annual Friendship Ball at the Holiday Inn Express and Suites, Latham. Best Buddies’ mission of social inclusion and friendship was evident throughout the night with countless hugs, selfies and conga lines. Before the dance battles begun, seven lucky female Buddies were nominated and given the opportunity to have their hair and makeup done, generously provided by the stylists at Haven Hair Studio. For many of the girls, this was the first time they had ever been pampered and attend a dance with their peers. It was an experience neither them nor their parents would ever forget. Amy Dawson, mother of Emily Dawson, participant at the College of Saint Rose, said, “It gives them a chance to go and feel accepted. It gives us, the parents, the chance to take pictures like the more typical situations.” The Friendship Ball provides a safe, fun environment for all participants to be themselves and celebrate their blooming friendships.
