Meet Madeline Slicker & Kelsey Fletcher
Who knew one person could have such a positive impact on your life? I didnt realize that until I met my Best Buddy, Kelsey Fletcher, on October 1, 2013. Ever since that day when we were matched up per our schools Best Buddies program, our friendship has grown and grown. When I first met Kelsey I have to admit that I was a little nervous. Kelsey, who is nonverbal, was the first person I have met who cannot speak. Of course like any other 15 year old I was thinking, I hope I can really connect with Kelsey. Little did I know at that time, that she not being able to speak would not be an issue but something that has brought us closer together.
The first few months we did the typical movie date or pottery painting, however, over the last year we have become closer than ever. Every time we spend time together is full of laughs and fun. Today we go swimming, attend baseball games and go out to dinner. If fact, we have become so close that I went on vacation with her family to her lake house in Georgia over Memorial Day Weekend. I was also fortunate enough to be able to attend Kelseys high school graduation. Every time we are done hanging out I feel happy inside, as she always brings a smile to my face. Today I can say that I know of all Kelseys signs, or as I call it Kelsey Language. This is not your typical sign language, rather signs she has created to express what she wants to say or likes from: Powerpuff Girls, The Lion King, the song Stayin Alive, The Little Mermaid and even my own name.
Kelsey has made it clear to me that my passion in life is Special Education, and I want to help others. She is truly the sweetest girl I have ever met and will be a lifelong friend. People always say to me that, Kelsey is so lucky to have you as a friend when in reality, I am really the lucky one.
