The Bayanihan Student Organization Fashion Show Fundraiser
On November 21, 2015, two ambassadors from Best Buddies in Wisconsin spoke on behalf of the organization at the Bayanihan Student Organization (BSO) Fashion Show Fundraiser. The Ambassador program offers people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) the opportunity to gain the public speaking skills, self-esteem, and confidence needed to successfully advocate for themselves, their peers and Best Buddies in communities, workplaces, and government. Currently, Best Buddies in Wisconsin has over 50 trained Ambassadors and we were excited to select two individuals to speak at this event.
The BSO at Marquette University seeks to promote, celebrate, and educate fellow students, and the community, about the Filipino culture. Their annual fashion show is one of the biggest student-lead charity events on Marquette University’s campus. Best Buddies in Wisconsin was nominated by the members of BSO to receive the funds raised at the event. For this particular event, we chose an ambassador that had a personal connection to the Filipino community and his message really resonated. Here’s a segment of what he shared at the event:
“… I would encourage anyone who likes to make new friends and meaningful friendships to look into being a Best Buddy to an adult with a disability. On a personal note, I am also glad to be here to represent the Filipino community. My dad, Basil, is from the Philippines and came here as an exchange student when he was 16 years old. I have traveled to the Philippines. I am proud to represent both Best Buddies and my Filipino heritage…”
Thanks to the BSO and our outstanding ambassadors, the event ended up raising over $5,000 for Best Buddies in Wisconsin. This donation will be used to support all of our programs, including the Ambassadors!
