Houston Hosts Buddy Ambassador Training
On Saturday, August 29th, Best Buddies held a Buddy Ambassador Training for five of our Houston area participants. Best Buddies Ambassadors is a program that provides training for participants with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in areas of speech writing, public speaking, and self-advocacy. Ambassadors create opportunities to share their life stories and promote Best Buddies programs. Best Buddies Ambassadors educates and empowers people with and without IDD to be leaders and public speakers in their schools, communities, and workplaces.
During this four-hour training, the buddies were paired with volunteer speech coaches that helped them navigate through the speech writing process. The ambassadors brainstormed ideas with the speech coaches to find the best way to express their experience in Best Buddies.
The parents of the buddies were invited to listen to the speeches at the end of the training. The purpose of the training is to ensure the ambassadors feel confident and empowered as they spread the mission of Best Buddies. The goal was definitely achieved! This group of students is ready to promote inclusion in our various chapters and communities.
We would like to send a special thank you to Jersey Mike’s for providing a delicious lunch for our participants and volunteers. We also greatly appreciate the members of the Greater Houston Auburn Club for volunteering as speech coaches.
