Best Buddies Citizens: A Life Changing Program in the Lives for Adults with Disabilities
The Best Buddies Citizens program is off and running in Connecticut!
After a brief hiatus, Best Buddies Connecticut re-opened our Citizens Program in September 2015! So, what is Best Buddies Citizens? At the base of the program, Citizens pairs an adult with an IDD in a one-to-one friendship with an adult without IDD from their local community.
Even though all of our participants are volunteers, this program is much more than community service; Citizens changes lives! Over the last several years, Best Buddies Citizens has not only enhanced the lives of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) but it has also changed the lives of the participants without IDD. Through learning to see things from a new perspective, people become more understanding, patient, and accepting of others within our community.
Citizens is a program for adults 18 years or older who are not, or cannot, be involved in our school friendship programs. A Citizens match is formed between two adults of the same gender. Matches are based on similar age, interests, and geographical proximity. Best Buddies staff conduct a thorough screening process to ensure they are making the right match.
By spending time together, both individuals are enhanced through this mutually-enriching friendship. Participants are required to have weekly communication, spend time together at least twice a month, and commit to their friendship for at least a year. However, these matches often grow into life-long friendships!
Best Buddies Connecticut will be offering various, fun activities throughout the year that you and your buddy can attend together! You are also encouraged to do activities you both like during your monthly outings. These activities can include going to sporting events, bowling, concerts, movies, enjoying food or coffee, or even just hanging out watching TV!
