Interview with Best Buddies Jobs Participant, Ryan Hoffman
How do you like working at Med-Care?
I think it’s a very nice atmosphere to work in with lots of nice people. The people working at Med-Care really understand each other.
What are your work responsibilities?
I take the bus to work each day and clock in at 8am. I gather the mail and open one at a time. I label the prescription letters and sort out the “can’t reach letters.” When I first started working at Med-Care, I helped Sara scan employee files into the computer for HR.
How has working at Med-Care influenced your life?
It has influenced me by helping me to adapt to different things, to take initiative, and I have improved my work responsibility.
Have you made connections with others in the workplace?
Yes. I made connections with Best Buddies in Miami. They helped me to get the job. I have made many friends at Med-Care by introducing myself and having conversations with people at lunchtime. Whenever I see people around the office, I introduce myself.
How do you like having a paycheck?
It’s great!! It helps me through most expenses.
What are your goals for the future with Med-Care and beyond?
My goals are to expand the company by working with Palm Beach County Schools, the ACCESS Program, and Best Buddies. I’d like to help students in the ACCESS Program receive training so that they can get jobs. I would like to help Med-Care support the transition program and offer internships for kids in Best Buddies. My goals are to build the company more and increase my work hours. I would like to begin working on a variety of jobs- like shipping and making boxes. My personal goals are to have my own apartment or house. In order to do that, I need to create financial savings.
How would you describe your experience at the Best Buddies Leadership Conference last weekend?
I enjoyed the job session and how I learned new things about how to improve my job and also I enjoyed all the fun activities- the dance, the Friendship Walk, the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, the bowling, the movies and also the campus history. I enjoyed getting to know the campus with the food courts and getting to know new sites in Indiana. I loved the lightening bugs and the maple trees. I got to meet Lauren Potter from Glee and David DeSanctis from the movie, Where Hope Grows. I was able to sit with them during the movie viewing one night. I got a lot out of the experience. I met a lot of new people from different states and different countries and got to exchange phone numbers and emails and social media with new friends.
