Best Buddies created the 2010 initiative in 2001 with the goal of operating programs in all 50 states, expanding our international programs to 50 countries, and positively impacting 500,000 people worldwide each year by the end of 2010. We are proud that we have already reached our goal of operating in 50 states and have surpassed our target of reaching 500,000 people annually. As we continue to work hard toward completing the 2010 initiative, we reflect on all of the milestones that we have reached in spreading our mission of friendship and inclusion on behalf of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). We couldn’t have done it without the help of our loyal sponsors, and we look forward to the next decade and century of working to close in on our goal of having it be commonplace to see people with intellectual disabilities on the frontlines of our schools, communities and workforce.
When you make a contribution to Best Buddies, not only are you providing people with IDD the opportunity to be integrated into the community and reach their full potential and achieve their dreams, you are also permitting people who are not disabled understand the value of people with IDD. Many of our participants in our middle school, high school and college programs will become leaders in the private sector and will hold decision making roles that will shape the future of our communities.
They will become CEOs of companies that will hire a person with a disability, landlords that will rent an apartment to a person with a disability, principals and teachers that will ensure full integration in the school system, doctors and nurses that will treat them with respect when healing them and policy makers that will lobby for the rights of people with disabilities. Additionally, Best Buddies Citizens, e-Buddies® and Best Buddies Jobs provide a bridge to successfully transition people with and without intellectual disabilities from school into the real world. Our newest program, Buddies United in Leadership Development (BUILD), educates and empowers people with IDD to be leaders and public speakers in their schools, communities, and workplaces and is the next step for the disablity rights movement, preparing people with IDD to become active agents of change.
