REPORT REVEALS OBESITY EPIDEMIC AMONG CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS, OUTLINES SOLUTIONS
AbilityPath.org launches national campaign to end obesity epidemic, publishes guide for parents and caregivers together with Special Olympics and Best Buddies International
San Francisco, CA – “Finding Balance: Obesity and Children with Special Needs” is a landmark study that focuses exclusively on how the obesity epidemic affects children with disabilities and special needs. For the first time, Finding Balance brings together in one place not only the devastating extent of the problem and its complex causes, but also presents practical and carefully researched solutions for families and others caring for children with disabilities and special needs.
In collaboration with Special Olympics and Best Buddies International, the country’s premier organizations representing those with intellectual disabilities, Finding Balance takes the national campaign against obesity to the population that may well be the most affected, and has –until now—been excluded from the conversation. The report shows why policy makers, educational and health professionals must include children with special needs and disabilities in all efforts to combat the nation’s obesity epidemic. The report is both a resource guide and a call to action. By treating obesity as not just a health issue, but also one of human dignity, the report offers help and hope to millions of American families.
